Mobile app or website: what does your business need

An app sounds impressive, but not everyone needs one. We look at when it pays off and when it is better to start with a convenient mobile website.

Many companies want “their own app”, but customers only install apps they use regularly. Let's work out what to choose.

When a website is enough

  • customers come to you rarely — once a month or less;
  • you need to be found on Google;
  • launch speed matters;
  • the main goal is to show services and get requests.

A modern website works well on a phone, needs no download and can be found in search.

When you need an app

  • customers use the service often: delivery, taxi, banking, a shop with regular purchases;
  • you need push notifications, offline mode, the camera or location;
  • there is a loyalty programme or an account people open every week.

A third option — a Telegram mini app

It opens inside Telegram, needs no installation and supports a catalog, a cart and a customer account. A good way to test demand before building a full app.

Installation Not needed Not needed Through an app store
Google search Yes No No
Push notifications Limited Via a bot Yes

Maintenance One version One version Two platforms, updates

Don't forget

  • an app has to be updated for new iOS and Android versions;
  • publishing on the App Store and Google Play requires developer accounts and review;
  • without a website or ads, nobody will find the app.

A common successful path: website → mini app or bot → full app once the audience has grown.

How to choose a provider

Ask to see published apps, check who will own the code and the store accounts, and how maintenance will work. Tips in the article “How to choose an IT contractor”.

Verified developers are in the “Mobile apps” section of GHOST.TJ. Providers set their own prices and timelines, and you compare proposals from a single request.
