How to open an online store in Tajikistan: a step-by-step plan

Step by step, how to launch an online store: which platform to choose, how to accept payments and organize delivery, how long it will take and where businesses most often lose money.

Selling through Instagram and Telegram is a good start, but over time orders outgrow what a single manager can handle in chats. An online store solves this: the catalog, prices and checkout work around the clock without a salesperson.

Step 1. Check whether you need a store right now

A store makes sense if:

  • you have more than 30–50 products, and customers keep asking "is it in stock?" and "how much is it?";
  • orders come in every day;
  • you are ready to invest in advertising — a website will not bring in buyers on its own.

If you have only a few products, start with a landing page or a catalog in a messenger, and launch the store when the flow of orders grows.

Step 2. Choose a platform

Option Best for Pros Cons
Website builder (Tilda and similar) Up to 100 products, quick start Launch in 1–2 weeks, inexpensive Limited features and integrations
CMS (WordPress + WooCommerce, OpenCart, Bitrix) Hundreds or thousands of products Flexible, many ready-made modules You need a contractor for setup and support
Custom development Non-standard logic, large volumes Everything fits your processes Expensive and slow

For most small stores, a CMS with a good template is enough.

Step 3. Prepare the catalog

The catalog is what sells. Each product needs:

  • a clear name and specifications;
  • 3–5 good photos on a plain background;
  • a price and stock status;
  • a description that answers the buyer's questions.

Preparing the catalog often takes longer than building the website. Plan the time and people for it.

Step 4. Payments

Buyers in Tajikistan still often pay on delivery, but the share of online payments is growing. Offer several methods:

  • cash or card on delivery;
  • online card payments — this requires an internet acquiring agreement with a bank;
  • transfers through apps and wallets popular in the country.

Check acquiring terms (fees, documents, connection time) with your bank: they differ.

Step 5. Delivery

Decide in advance:

  • whether you deliver only in your city or across the country;
  • your own courier, a courier service or pickup;
  • how much delivery costs and the order amount above which it is free.

Describe the delivery and return terms on a separate page of the website — it builds trust.

Step 6. Promotion

After launch, bring in buyers through:

  • Instagram and Telegram — a link to the catalog instead of endless chats;
  • Google — SEO for product categories and search ads;
  • repeat sales — newsletters to regular customers.

Common mistakes

  • Launching without photos and descriptions — "we'll fill them in later".
  • No mobile version: most buyers visit from their phones.
  • A complicated checkout with mandatory registration.
  • No one responds to orders quickly — the buyer goes to a competitor.
